Engagement shoots could be, hands down, my favorite sessions (next to the wedding day). It is a chance to learn about my new couple, giggle, be free, and create gorgeous images they can not only share with friends and family, but have to look back on in the years to come.
There is no “right way” of preparing for an engagement shoot, or the “right” clothes to wear. However, I have found some things photograph better than others, as well as a few little pointers to make an engagement session run that much more smooth and relaxed. If you are one of my brides, or just happened upon this page and already have a photographer, please feel free to keep reading! I hope this helps, gives some insight, and might inspire you for your shoot a tad bit more! I’m excited to shoot with you and your loved one!
Tip #1: Find a location that suits YOU.
Of course, I have my holy grail, handful of locations that never fail and are always pretty. Great backup options. However, I encourage you both to research and find a location that you feel comfortable in. I want this to be a location of happiness for you both. Possibly where you met? A favorite spot you like to watch the sun go down? Where he proposed? These are just some ideas, if you need help, I’m here!
Tip #2: Hair and Makeup
I always encourage my brides to have their hair and makeup professionally done. For a couple of reasons. First, It is a great opportunity to work with the makeup artist you might be using on your wedding day. It is a trial run-through, and helps you see what you like best! Second, professional makeup just photographs beautifully. We all CAN do our makeup, however, a makeup artist that has spent years refining their craft, just adds that extra magic and technique. Third and probably the best reason (haha), Who doesn’t like feeling pampered?! Having your makeup and hair done is some of the best time/money spent.
Tip #3: Clothing Options
To start, I want everyone to feel beautiful in whatever it is that they are wearing. If it’s a dress, fabulous. Jeans and a shirt? Awesome. You do you boo. With most engagement sessions, we have usually enough time for two outfit changes. With that said: I would recommend one outfit a bit more on the casual side and one outfit a bit more formal. This way we get a nice variety in your album and can play up both sides. For the gals, anything that cinches in at the smallest part of your waist will be the most flattering, dresses, shirts, skirts, etc. However, I am a huge fan of movement in clothing. Possibly a long flowy skirt, or dress, something for you to play with while we are shooting. Movement in images is my (favorite). As for colors, I like to always recommend a neutral color pallet. It reflects light beautifully, blends well with whatever your fiance is wearing, and gives great creaminess to an image. Can I talk, or can I talk?!
Tip #4: Arriving on Time
I am a natural light photographer, oh boy do I love my sunsets and beautiful afternoon light. The downfall? When the sun goes, it goes. So, arriving on time or a bit early and ready to shoot at the start time is a wonderful thing!
Tip #5: Accessorize!
First and foremost, I would highly recommend having your engagement ring freshly cleaned, or clean it yourself. We want to see all that sparkle it has to offer! Also, accessories are great. Have a few sets of earrings to try out. Layer the bracelets, necklaces, scarfs, whatever it is that you like to express your style with.
Tip #6: Pay attention to the details
Small details matter. Clean, fresh manicure and pedicure looks great on camera. For the guys, a nice haircut, beard, clean shoes. The little things actually play a big role!
Tip #7: Come to the shoot feeling inspired
At the end of the day, this is about your love, and documenting it to the best of our ability. I want you to come into the shoot happy, excited, and inspired. Read a great book before hand. Flip through the pages of a gorgeous Vogue magazine. Take a walk with your loved one. Se a great movie. Whatever it is that makes you inspired and feel love and happiness. Do that.
I can’t wait to shoot your love story, and I hoped this post helped give some insight! Please leave a comment if you have any other tips that helped you or any thoughts for future posts!
